A Netflix series, created at ShadowMachine
Aug 2025
Raphael Bob-Waksberg, creator of Netflix’s long-running series BoJack Horseman, is back at the streamer with another animated comedy, Long Story Short. Per the logline, the series is about a family, over time. It’s about the shared history, the inside jokes, the old wounds. If you’ve ever had a mother, father, sibling, partner or child, this is the show for you — and by the way, would it kill you to call them?
As the Lead Character Designer on this exciting new show, I have the honor of guiding a talented team of artists while collaborating closely with our vendor partner. I’m fortunate to work alongside the incredible Lisa Hanawalt and Alison Dubois. My role involves providing support through drawovers, model sheets, turnarounds, special poses, script-focused designs, costume design, creating a style guide and more. My focus is on fostering creativity within the team and ensuring that our collective vision comes to life.
Below is some selective artwork that I’ve worked with along my team.
Costume work was a big factor for this show given many of our characters visit different time periods. Each character has a specific taste in fashion throughout the years and it was very important to reflect it throughout the show. Below you’ll find some mood boards displaying the thinking behind the clothing. Enjoy!
Each character had a specific quirk and era in which I guided myself with. As an example, we looked at old family photos from a specific event, in a specific year, specific age group, and more. Research is highly key to getting these characters more recognizable for our audiences.
