I’ve been hired as Character Visdev artist focusing on characters on this amazing team at Paramount Animation. We’re lead by our amazing Director Chris Miller (Puss in Boots, Shrek the third, Penguins of Madagascar) and Co-Director Matt Landon (Captain Underpants, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), Produced by Ryan Harris (The Lego Batman Movie, The Book of Life, Rise of the Guardians).
Our outstanding design leads Production Designer Max Boas (Kung Fu Panda 3, Shrek Forever After, Rise of the Guardians, Abominable) and Art Director Margaret Wuller (Croods, How to Train your Dragon, Turbo).
I was brought on early on to help find the look and style of what Smurfette could be. I then was hired on and I've focused on main and secondary character designs (most time with Smurfette), costume design, character surfacing, poses, turnarounds and packaging handoffs. Thanks for looking!

At some point during the exploration, we looked into avant garde type of dresses that she could wear during a sequence of the film. Smurfette is very stylish and we wanted to reflect that into her costume design!

During pre-visdev exploration for Smurfette, we looked into various styles of her classic dress. I explored dresses that reference the time period of the original tv show while bringing a taste of Rihanna into the costume design as well.

Ultimately, what helped hone in our Smurfette, was researching organic shapes in a smurfs world. I tried to think of organic materials a Smurf would use and would try to blend in to avoid being seen by our villain. Smurfette’s dress has inspiration of wild mushrooms while maintaining her classic dress from the TV show. This was incredibly fun and challenging to turn something organic into a usable costume for our hero.
